Program Notes:
Sketches from America: Day and Night was originally written as the score for a wonderful short film directed by Darren Johnson. This film gives us a cinematic glimpse into beautiful American landscapes and bustling city environments through the lens of drone footage. As the title suggests, the film explores these elements from the daytime and nighttime themes. I had the privilege of working on this film with a fellow student at the University of Georgia, Palmer Hartley, who tackled writing music for the “daytime” portion of the film. My task, and the resulting music for this concert arrangement, were inspired by the “nighttime” footage. My hope for this piece is to convey the feelings of beauty and awe that the footage from the film gave me.
